Romantic Comedies – Love Can Be Funny

Romantic comedies are my favorite! So when my honey gifted me a selection of romantic comedy DVDs one Valentine’s Day some years back, I was thrilled. (To read a related Valentine’s Day post that gives an overview of Leap Year, visit Love is in the Air.)

But the best part?

As I poured over the pile of romantic comedies in the gift box, my honey uttered those four little words I was dying to hear.

“Watch one with me?” he asked.

I nodded.

“You choose.”

I held one of my favorite titles that he’d refused to watch whenever I’d suggested it. “Even this one?” I teased.

He smiled. “Sure.”

I squinted at him. “Who are you and what have you done with my husband?”

He shrugged as if to reassure me it was a non-issue.

Moving closer, I asked, “You do know what movie this is?” In an effort to jog his obvious memory lapse, I read the title and quoted him. “As appealing as watching hair grow, and—”

“And as painful as pulling it out.” He nodded. “Yeah, I remember. Why don’t you get the movie set up while I pour the wine?”

Now that is love…

“Okay,” I mumbled, shaking my head. The guy hated shopping but he’d trekked to the video store, scanned titles and picked ones I liked best, then stood in line and paid for them. He could’ve passed over those two titles he abhorred, but he hadn’t.

And I’d thought that after twenty-five years together, he couldn’t surprise me anymore. Slowly, I slid my selected DVD into the player.

“Ready?” My honey handed me a glass of Malbec.

I smiled, lifting the drink in a toast. “To you, the man willing to suffer emotional hardship for my viewing pleasure.”

He laughed. “It won’t be that bad.”

“No, it won’t.” I agreed, and handed over the remote—a symbol of power in our household.

He clicked Play, then hugged me close at the first strains of the movie’s soundtrack. “Love Actually?” He gazed at me. “Great movie, but we just watched this one a few weeks ago. Why’d you change your mind? You haven’t seen the other one in over a year. I bought it because I knew you’d be so excited to finally see it.”

I shrugged. “You really like this one. I can watch the other one another time, whenever I want, because of you.”

Yeah, love can be funny that way.

  1. We’re not huge Valentine’s Day people…no big dinners out, expensive gifts. But I get a card every year, as do our daughters. There have been years when all 3 of us get flowers but there are years when we get flowers “just because”. I like those days better!
Great bunch of movies…some of my favorites 🙂

    1. You’ve Got Mail is among my favorites list of favorites, too, Linda. You might be interested in my romantic comedy, TEXT ME, BABY, that will release this spring, since it was inspired by elements of that movie as well as Roxanne and How to Lose a Guy in Ten Days…in addition to my imagination, of course. 🙂

    1. I really love that one, Flora. Ooh, the family dynamics and the woman finding love after divorce. Another one I love is The Family Stone. Guess I forgot to include that in my list. 🙂

  2. I love valentines because in the 90’s hubby put a heart shaped Valentine’s ad in the paper that said he loved me and would I marry him ? He was waiting with a heart shaped diamond ring for me. I said yes of course. Funny part was later on that night he says to me. ” you know how many electric down riggers I could have boat for my fishing boat with the money it cost him for that ring?” Lmao jerk ! I responded ” are you saying I’m not worth it?” He back tracked as fast as he could. Lol

  3. Live the tender little things my husband does, if he knows I am having a bad night a work he will show up with a little treat to cheer me up. If we are both working we always send a text to each other, have s good night , love you!❤️❤️

    1. You two are so adorable. I love that you focus on the little things, too. Have a wonderful week, Shari, and thanks so much for stopping by. oxo

    1. I’ll have to add The Notebook and An Affair to Remember to my list of faves. How could I have forgotten those?! 🙂

    1. Thanks, Pat. One More Sunset is definitely on the lighter side of romantic suspense, with a few comical parts to balance the scary ones. And, of course the magical element gives it a whimsical feeling. If you read it, I’d love to hear what you think.

My upcoming release, however, is pure romantic comedy, and is titled Text Me, Baby! I was inspired by so many of the romantic comedies I’ve read/watched. (May 9th for Entangled’s Lovestruck imprint)

    1. Thanks for commenting, Mary. 🙂 Yes, all the generations in one sweet story. And poor Lucy, she’s so torn. My ultimate favorite romantic part of that movie is when the hero talks to Lucy about the “lean.” Such wonderful tension. The other part that strikes a chord with me is when the father talks about how life is perfect for about one second.

  4. That is such an interesting type of romance to pull off as a writer, considering they never meet until the very end. But I absolutely love it as a viewer!! <3

  5. I have a long list, and all of them are older because now days I only get to see what my three sons pick which is either cartoons or superheros, lol.
    Coyote Ugly
    Grease 1&2
    Mamma Mia
    Crybaby
    Practical Magic
    What Women want

    1. I was a huge Grease fan as a young teen. Memorized all the lyrics to the record to my mother’s dismay. LOL. Saw Mamma Mia on Broadway a number of years ago, incredible songs and fun story. Thanks so much for stopping by, Christina. 🙂

  6. I love your choices. I haven’t seen French Kiss, or The Ugly Truth in a while. I’ll check them out again. I think While You Were Sleeping is my all time favorite movie. And, I love Pride and Prejudice too.

  7. I enjoyed War and Peace- not realizing how much of a love story that it was. It truly was a love story- among other things. I love Pride and Predjudice. . And have you ever seen Dr. Zhivago?

    1. I’ve always meant to see Dr. Zhivago, but haven’t gotten around to it yet. Now it’s back at the top of my to-see list. Thanks for the recommendation, Karen. 🙂

  8. I love Kate and Leopold, I.Q., The Holiday and Pride and Prejudice with Kiera Knightley. You have a good man there. 🙂

    1. Ah, Kate and Leopold! Great addition to my list. I’ve yet to see I.Q. Have to check it out. Happy Valentine’s Day, Kaela. 🙂
